A-League set for August 1 restart - sources

A-League players will be back in training on July 1, with the remainder of the season to commence on Aug. 1, sources have told ESPN.

Clubs were informed of the plans late on Friday afternoon (AEST), with five rounds of matches plus a finals series remaining to complete the 2019-20 A-League season.

Details are yet to be confirmed, but the hub model is thought to the preferred option, with Sydney the front-runner to host the remaining fixtures. All teams will observe the ongoing health and safety...

Players' union threatens Perth Glory owner with legal action

GOLD COAST -- Australia's professional footballers' union is threatening legal action against Perth Glory owner Tony Sage after he stood down the A-League club's players and staff.

Less than a week after Football Federation Australia suspended the 2019-20 A-League season until at least April 22 due to the coronavirus outbreak, Sage has stood down all of the club's players and staff.

The decision prompted an angry response from the PFA, who have promised to initiate legal proceedings if Sage...

A condensed A-League season looks set to play out almost entirely in Sydney and Melbourne under a revamped schedule that is close to finalisation.

Wellington Phoenix general manager David Dome gave an insight into the overhauled nature of the league caused by the need to isolate teams and reduce travel because of the coronavirus.

Dome revealed Australia's two biggest cities will be hubs for the remainder of the regular season, which will be completed by mid-April at empty stadiums.

The health and safety of staff and officials

Much like when bushfires ravaged parts of Victoria and New South Wales earlier this season, this weekend provided a reminder as to the real-life importance of football and sport.

With the threat of COVID-19, the safety of people working in and around the A-League must take primary importance. Similarly to the Australian economy itself, however, the competition's...

Leaders Sydney drop points in scoreless draw against Perth

Milos Ninkovic and Nicholoas D'Agostino battle for the ball.

If Sydney FC fans were hoping for a spectacular showing before what might be the last chance to see live football in the near future, they would be sadly disappointed as the A-League champions turned in an unusually flat showing at home in a scoreless draw with Perth.

In the end, runaway leaders Sydney FC did enough to win Saturday evening's contest at Kogarah, notably with two late glaring misses, but the Glory could easily have bagged all three points after a strong second-half showing.

A modest...
