Fenerbahce-Trabzonspor abandoned after fan attacks assistant referee

Fenerbahce's Super Ligue match against Trabzonspor was abandoned with a minute remaining on Sunday after a fan attacked the assistant referee.

On Monday, Turkish authorities detained two Trabzonspor fans -- both of them minors -- for attacking an assistant referee during a home game against rival Fenerbahce, causing the game to be abandoned.

With the home side trailing 4-0, a Trabzonspor supporter jumped over the barrier at the front of the stand, and attacked assistant referee Volkan Bayarslan, Fenerbahce explained on their website.

The state-run Anadolu Agency said on Monday a 17-year-old high school student, identified by his initials O.M., and a second minor, who has not been identified, were detained and would be questioned by police dealing with juveniles.

A statement from the Turkish Football Federation read: "In the match between Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor in week 30 of the Spor Toto Super Lig, in the 89th minute assistant referee Volkan Bayarslan was assaulted.

"The on-field action was suspended by referee Bulent Yildirim.

"A decision on the result will be made by the league's board of directors.''

A series of photographs on Fenerbahce's website showed another a fan climbing to the top of a stand and pulling down Fenerbahce's club flag.

Fans also pulled down safety netting at the front of their stand, while riot police were deployed to regain order and one photo showed a young girl in Trabzonspor colours being carried to safety by a policeman.

Alper Potuk, Volkan Sen and former Manchester United pair Nani and Robin van Persie scored Fenerbahce's goals before the onset of the trouble.
