WSW set to axe manager Babbel - sources

Western Sydney Wanderers are expected to part ways with coach Markus Babbel within the next 24 hours, sources close to the club have confirmed to ESPN.

It is believed Babbel's fate was determined prior to Sunday's match against Perth, with the Wanderers hierarchy deciding on the change late last week, after running out of patience with the German coach.

The only sticking point that remains is if the Wanderers will wait until chairman Paul Lederer returns from overseas to officially end Babbel's tenure with the club.

The club's much anticipated return to Parramatta has failed to light up the season, with Babbel overseeing a hugely disappointing campaign that sees the team in ninth spot on the ladder.

An announcement confirming Babbel's departure is expected on Monday with assistant Jean-Paul De Marigny and former Wanderers striker Labinot Haliti expected to be appointed as the interim coaching team.

Lederer and Chief Executive John Tsatsimas will then begin the search for a new coach to keep the club's slim finals hopes alive.
